Get to Know | Natalya

In this release, we are pleased to introduce Natalya Kuzmina, who channels her lifelong passion for painting into crafting beautiful digital landscapes! 

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT FOLKS?
I’m a Senior Digital Matte Painting and Environment Artist. I mostly work on 2D and 2.5D matte painting projections and concepts, as well as 3D environments — usually with a lot of CG trees.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FIELD OF VISUAL EFFECTS?
I have a BFA in Visual Arts and Art Education. After graduation, I immigrated to Canada and decided to take a 3D Animation course at Seneca College — partly to improve my English, but also to find a more practical way to apply my traditional art background. I didn’t become an animator, but that program opened the door to visual effects. I got my first job as a modeler and texture artist, and I was lucky to work for a studio that encouraged artists to explore different departments. Over time, I gained experience in Modeling, Texturing, and Lighting before eventually discovering Digital Matte Painting — which felt like the perfect fit for my fine art background and the technical skills. 

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING IN VFX? 
I enjoy being part of the “movie magic.” Even after years in the industry, it still amazes me to see ideas come to life. I also love working with other artists and being part of a team where everyone inspires and supports each other.

THE FIVE MAIN VALUES OF FOLKS ARE CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION, EXCELLENCE, SIMPLICITY AND KINDNESS. WHICH ONE DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH? 
I’d say collaboration. Creativity is obviously important, but in VFX it’s really about how all the departments and artists work together. 

WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW? 
It’s not exactly surprising given my job, but outside of work I love painting traditionally, mostly in oils and mixed media. I’m an Elected Member of the Society of Canadian Artists and have won a few awards at juried shows. Lately I’ve been doing small daily paintings in the evenings after work — it’s my way to relax and unwind. You can see some of them on Instagram at @n_kuzmina_art.
