Get to Know | Randy

Today, meet Randy, one of our compositors at FOLKS Bogotá, who enjoys the daily challenges of visual effects and finds fulfillment in continuous learning.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT FOLKS?
I'm a digital compositor at FOLKS Bogotá. My role includes finalizing shots or sequences using and combining various techniques and assets provided by the 3D and 2D departments, such as matte paintings, to achieve an artistic and photographic result that looks as close to reality as possible.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING IN VFX?
What I love most about working in VFX, especially at FOLKS, is the endless amount of knowledge you can gain daily, whether it's technical, artistic, or human. Every day there's something new to learn that you can apply to become more efficient or develop a better artistic eye, and that's a constant source of motivation.

THE FIVE MAIN VALUES OF FOLKS ARE CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION, EXCELLENCE, SIMPLICITY, AND KINDNESS. WHICH ONE DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH?
I would say kindness and collaboration. These values resonate with me the most at FOLKS because they help us grow and learn as a team, achieving the incredible results we do. In my opinion, these are the most important values not just for our work as VFX artists, but for every aspect of life.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS CONSIDERING A CAREER IN THE VFX?
Enjoy the journey, be proactive in your learning by seeking technical and artistic information online since there's an abundance of knowledge at our fingertips, ask your colleagues any questions you have, and never forget it's a team effort, so be kind!

IF YOU HAD TO NAME A COLLEAGUE WHO INSPIRES YOU, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Whenever I have the chance to work with Andrea Espinal and Nicholas Seal on any project, there's always something new to learn. They have impressive technical knowledge and artistic vision, and the best part is they're always willing to teach you anything.

WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW?
I love video games! Ever since I can remember, I've always played them, and they've always been a part of my daily life, so it's my main nerdy hobby.

IN WHAT FOLKS PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF YOUR WORK?
I loved working on Season 4 of Titans. Besides being a project with incredible results from the entire team, it was one of the most important projects for my own development, as it gave me many opportunities to learn, experiment, and gain a new perspective on my artistic work. Sometimes as VFX artists, we're so focused on technical knowledge and problem-solving that we forget why we're called artists. Technique is as important as your artistic eye and knowledge, and they should always go hand in hand.

WHAT SHOT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I really enjoyed working on this shot. It's one of my favorites because it was a great opportunity to develop a creative look for the desired effect and apply it to an entire sequence. To achieve these results, I had to learn new techniques, and that is something I love!
